Master weaver Isaac Vásquez beside a traditional wooden pedal loom in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca

Maestro
Isaac Vásquez

A master weaver of Teotitlán del Valle, Isaac Vásquez García devoted his life to the loom and to the plants and insects that dye its threads. Beginning in the 1950s, he led the revival of pre-Hispanic Zapotec and Mixtec natural dyes — cochineal, indigo, lichen, acacia — and his workshop became known internationally as The Bug in the Rug. He is recognized among the twelve great masters of Oaxacan folk art. This is a living archive of the writing and tributes that document his legacy.
