What makes a rug Zapotec

Zapotec rugs, or tapetes, are flat-woven wool textiles made by Zapotec families in Teotitlán del Valle and neighbouring villages in the Oaxaca valley. The technique arrived with the Spanish treadle loom in the sixteenth century, but the motifs — stepped frets, diamonds, serpents, the greca patterns carved into the stone walls of Mitla and Monte Albán — are far older than that.

A genuine piece is woven, not tufted or printed: there is no glued backing, the pattern reads clearly on both faces, and the weft is packed tight enough that the rug hangs flat. Fringe is the finished warp of the loom, knotted by hand, rather than a strip sewn on afterwards.

Wool and natural dyes

Our pieces are woven in churro and merino wool, hand-carded and spun in the village. Colour comes from cochineal (the insect that lives on the nopal cactus, giving reds and pinks), indigo, marigold, pomegranate rind, pecan husk and moss — the same dye plants Oaxacan weavers have used for centuries.

Naturally dyed wool ages slowly and unevenly in the best way: reds warm, indigos soften. Synthetic-dyed rugs look flatter and often bleed when a damp cloth is pressed against them.

Sizes and where they go

Most of our pieces run 2' × 3' and 2.5' × 5' — the scale that works beside a bed, in an entry, in front of a sink, or hung as a wall textile. Larger area sizes are available by commission and take roughly six to twelve weeks on the loom.

Wool is naturally resilient and dirt-shedding. Vacuum without a beater bar, rotate every few months, and spot-clean with cool water; professional wool cleaning every few years is enough for a rug that will outlive you.

Buying direct from the weavers

NISAYA works with three generations of one weaving family. The name of the weaver appears on every product page, and pricing reflects what the loom work actually costs — a 2.5' × 5' rug represents weeks of work between dyeing, warping and weaving.

Because every piece is one of one, once a rug sells it is gone. If you see a design you like and it has been claimed, ask us for a similar piece and we will show you what is on the loom.
